Duplicate Content & Why Unique Product Descriptions Matter

2 min read

If your product pages aren't ranking, duplicate content is the most likely culprit. It's the quiet killer of Shopify SEO — and the most fixable.

What "duplicate content" means here

Two common forms hurt stores:

  1. Supplier/manufacturer copy. You paste the description the supplier provides — and so do the hundreds of other stores selling the same product. Search engines have no reason to rank your copy over anyone else's.
  2. Internal duplication. The same boilerplate description reused across many of your own products (common with variants and similar SKUs).

Why it holds you back

Search engines try to show the most useful, original result. If your description is identical to dozens of competitors, there's nothing unique to reward — so you get buried, even with a great product and price.

The fix: unique descriptions

  • Rewrite supplier copy in your own voice, with your own angle.
  • Give genuinely similar products distinct descriptions that highlight what differs.
  • Add specifics only you provide — use cases, styling, comparisons, real detail.

Doing it across a whole catalog

Rewriting one description is easy. Rewriting thousands is why most stores never fix this. The AI Product Description Generator generates a unique description per product in bulk — pulling from each product's own data and images, in your brand voice — so you replace duplicated supplier copy across the entire catalog quickly. It also tracks which content is generated versus saved, so you can see what's been refreshed.

How to check

  • Paste a sentence from a product description into Google in quotes. Many results means it's duplicated copy.
  • Spot-check similar products for repeated boilerplate.

Fix duplication first — it's often the difference between pages that rank and pages that don't.
